Is music production skills or talent? quick comparison

mp3 for mastering

This is the hardest question to answer at the same time easy to answer with one word called “it depends”. I am not going to do that instead I will be answering whether music production is a skill or its real talent straight to your face without any fluff.

There are certain things we have to consider when we talk about music production. The people who are music producers come from different backgrounds and different talents. It’s not easy to say like music production only requires a skill you don’t need talent.

There is some talent attached to it as well. We cannot justify this without diving deep and analyzing why music production can be a skill and why it can be a talent as well. To give you the short answer,

Music production can be learned as a skill but excelling in music production requires constant learning and talent. The road to being a music producer will differ from person to person. Some people can do it in 3 years and some people might take 5 years to grasp how to make a complete song.

Let’s decipher this even more, shall we

Learning music production

I have talked so much about music production and learning music production and one thing that I always advise people is that you don’t need to be special to learn music production. You can do it if you put your heart and soul into it.

Does learning music production require any skill or talent? No, it doesn’t require any skill or talent. It requires hard work and commitment to put in the time to actually work at it day in and day out, no matter the circumstances that you are in.

You can check my article on how long does it take to be a professional in music production to understand that. The normal complaint that I see among beginners is that DAW looks like an alien machine with 1000’s of buttons. It may be true but once you spend some time with it you will understand that it’s not that hard to navigate in DAW.

Does entering into music production require any skill? No, if you can operate your laptop, you are good to go. You just need to put in the time to learn.

Making money with music production

As we have moved on from learning music production, now the question shifts to does making money with music production requires skill or talent? The answer is a HUGE NO!!.

You don’t have to be a genius in music production to make money with it. Let me give you an example. Nowadays podcasts are popping everywhere. If you create a fiver gig or any freelance gig stating that you will edit the audio and add proper music to it. You can earn anywhere from 100$ a week to 3000$ a month if you are skilled at it.

It’s not that hard at all. If this is small, if you get hired by a YouTuber or a creative associate to work for their videos to clean the audio alone you will get paid so much money. The ability to make money with music production doesn’t require you to have any skill or talent naturally other than the hard work to learn the software.

If you can’t do that, the next best thing that you can do is sell beats. If you ask any veteran beat maker “how long does it take to make my first best beat?” the answer will be all your beats are best beats. The beats that you think are trash will be celebrated by other people, bought a thousand times.

Feel like you can’t sell beats, go into stock music licensing. It’s a huge market where people are looking for music.

Excelling in music production

This is whole another level of music production. This is the place where you see guys like Pharrell, zaytoven. These people worked hard to learn and craft their production but the talent they had pushed them into the 1% of the population that excels in making songs.

Being the top 1% of the music production list requires consistent hard work and persistence to go after your goals no matter how much you are pulled down.

Therefore never weigh yourself down thinking, oh I don’t have this, or I don’t have that. You don’t have to be in the top 1% to put food on the table. You don’t!!!

The people with natural talent will always have an edge over you. Do I think you can beat it with hard work? Yes, you can.

If you put your head down and work things will come to you no matter what. Some people call it the law of attraction I call it the result of labor.

Conclusion

I hope that this article brought some questions to ask yourself about music production as to if it’s a skill or a talent and how you are approaching It as well.

You shouldn’t give up thinking that it’s not for you at all. Give it a solid three years to see how you are in music production. Doing something for three months and searching for results and money is the absolute stupidity that you can do. Being good at making music takes time. Be patient with it you will see massive results. I promise you, these results are exponential.
